About Us

Buying and selling Magic: The Gathering cards was something we stumbled into rather than planned. One fateful day in 2016 my son and I had just left our LGS one day and decided to pop into a silent auction shop “just in case it had any Magic cards.”. It did - an old box of random cards. We flicked through it, wrote the princely sum of $30 on the bid sheet, and a week later learned our bid had secured the prize.

The box contained some cool, older cards we’d never seen before. None of the cards were super valuable except for a Sliver Queen. We flipped some of the cards to recoup our investment and in that moment first experienced the thrill of trading our favourite little rectangular pieces of cardboard. It paid for a modest sushi lunch and thus, Power 9 Games was born.

We still have the Sliver Queen - safe in the Power 9 Vault (a desk drawer).  We've sold a few other Sliver Queens but this one we're keeping for sentimental reasons.

Our Token Story

The original idea for a token came in 2020 as a way of launching our online buylist www.mtgbuylist.com.au. A talented friend did the artwork - with the initial plan to use it to make the card below. However, our would-be artist’s bandwidth was limited, so we needed another plan.

Power 9 Games token design
Enter Jay Hilgenfeld, our extraordinary artist based in Texas. With Jay's great comic book art style we knew we had to do some tokens. Our first token was the Kangaroo Beast which triggered some great customer feedback and a torrent of ideas - some very uniquely Aussie ideas.  Despite being an honorary Aussie (he follows the NRL closely), some of our design briefs to Jay have required a lot of patience, links to youtube videos, recipes and detailed explanations of various local oddities we take for granted. Jay does amazing work and we’re very fortunate to partner with him for our tokens.
It is a genuine pleasure to be part of the Australian MTG community, and an even greater pleasure to bring a piece of Australiana to the game we love so much.
We get asked to sell tokens all the time so launching this site is long overdue.
